Downhill biking tires - Part I

Biking in Morzine & Les Gets, one has to be aware of the tires issue.

Each style of biking, specifically mountain biking requires a different design of tires. In this Post we‘ll try to help you choose the best fitting tires required for downhill mountain biking, espeicially in Morzine & mountain bike Les Gets.

Downhill tires are usually wider than most other tires. The width of tires designed for downhill biking range from 2.2 to 3 inches. In addition, downhill tires have a relatively high number of knobs which are apart from each other in order to help you shed off mud and rocks that can stick on to your bike while riding. Knobs on tires can provide traction on loose terrains such you can find in the Morzine & Les Gets area.

There are a few basic tradeoffs regarding mountain bike tires. The first tradeoff has to do with the tires‘ width and weight. Narrow tires, on the one hand are lighter and provide a faster ride, yet on the other hand lack the width and mass needed in order to maneuver the bike through rough terrain. Another tradeoff regards traction. When riding on smooth terrains and surfaces we seek to have a minimum amount of traction in order to build up speed. When riding on a pavement or a road, we wish to have minimal contact with the pavement or road. On the other hand when riding on tough terrain, we need traction in order to provide us with an easier ride. Knobs on mountain bikes create friction and traction. The more space there is between the knobs, your bike will have more traction.

Unless you‘re an absolute downhill buff, it‘s advisable to find tires which are in the middle of the two extremes. It‘s quite common to see bikers who have a few sets of tires meant for riding different terrains. Switching tires before riding on a different style of terrain can enhance your riding experience immensely.

The second part of this focus will focus on tire pressure and other aspects regarding tires meant for downhill mountain biking in general, and specifficaly in the Morzine - Les Gets area.
